The Civil Engineering Department at Camosun College will host the the Seventeenth Annual Spaghetti Bridge Competition during Open House Thursday April 29th, 2010. The Junior Competition (grades 6-9) will be held as part of the Skills Canada Competition which will take place on Friday, March 26th. For Details, please visit the Skills Cananda website.
The competition will be open to all, with separate competitions for the following three divisions:
Students may build their bridges before the competition or they can build them at Camosun on the 29th. To register and obtain a U-bolt, please contact us. The bridges are to be constructed entirely out of spaghetti and hot melt glue. The bridges will be loaded until they collapse. The bridges will be judged based on the ratio of the maximum load held before collapsing compared to the weight of the bridge. For the complete details see the official rules. The schedule for the 29th is shown below with all events taking place in room TEC 110 or the attrium just outside TEC 110 :
9:00 AM – building bridges begins (for those building at Camosun)
3:30 PM – Testing of bridges in the High SchoolCategory
4:00 PM – Awards for High school students
4:15 PM – Testing of bridges for Technology students
5:00 PM – Testing of bridges for the Open Division
These times are approximate and will be adjusted on the day to accommodate the actual number of entries we have in each class. Students should arrive at least 30 minutes before their scheduled start time to get organized, perform minor repairs and weigh their bridges.
